Churches of Christ: Who are these people?
PROFILE
Since Churches of Christ are autonomous (independent and self-ruled), no mandatory reporting mechanism exists. This makes data somewhat unreliable . The following figures have been harvested from the best available information at the time of this writing.
Worldwide there are some 27,500 congregations of Churches of Christ, with a total of about 2.4 million adherents. Some of these are small churches of only a few members, while some consist of several hundred, even a few thousand.
The United States accounts for approximately 12,600 of these churches, with about 1.6 million adherents. The greatest concentration of numerical strength is in the southern United States where, for instance, there are about 39,000 adherents in some 102 congregations in Dallas, Texas. Or a similar number in Nashville, Tennessee, where there are about 35,000 adherents in 100 congregations.
In Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Alabama, Kentucky
– and others-there is a congregation in almost every town , no matter how small. While the number of churches is not as numerous in other places , there are Churches of Christ in all fifty states in the United States, and in 138 other countries
